“Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith fail not.” Jesus prayed for his disciple Peter in Luke 22:31 and 32.
Now, I know little about sifting wheat but that process of grating, sieving, combining, threshing and winnowing a human being like wheat is not my portion in Jesus name. Devil Resist!
Once, years ago, I was hit by a car on a Nairobi highway which would have ordinarily meant instantaneous death. Two weeks later while recovering from the escaped near deleterious accident, I was hit by a speeding bike and sent flying to oncoming traffic where I escaped death by a whisker.
Something kept me going. That something was my faith in God. How do you explain the shock on the doctors who could not find a single fracture? That I healed in a record two weeks despite swollen legs and shoes stuck to my feet from the accident? I am an addict of hope.
We have all faced times of quivering or tired faith. Loss of income, health problems, and death happen and we are left puzzled about where God is and why all these things ensued.
This Thing called Faith
What is this faith that Jesus was referring to for Peter? Put plainly, faith is believing in God, trusting his will and plans for our lives even when we don’t understand it and can’t spot it.
As it applies to our life, however, faith is about more than just an emotion, it’s about living it through obedience to God and acts of service-with the best resource for direction as the Bible. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world!
Faith Tales from Folk that Faithed It Till They Made It
- By faith Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered God faithful.
- Like a buzzing bee to the judge’s ear, the persistent widow with little power as told through Jesus’ parable valiantly got justice. Luke 18. This woman would just not give up.
- Deferential Joseph embraced God’s promises, was oppressed by his brothers, imprisoned by his master but promoted by God in the end.
- By faith, Noah defied mockery to build a large boat that saved the world from the flood.
- David, a man after God’s heart through faith overcame years of torment by jealous King Saul, the giant goliath, an assassination attempt by his own blood, etc.
- Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego danced and sang praises to God in the large furnace heated seven times hotter than usual as instructed by the deluded Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar.
- Tragedy struck the affluent man Job who lost everything including his health. And what did he do? He praised God and got restored much more than before.
- Queen Esther’s faith advocacy saved the lives of her people through prayer and fasting, a relationship and the perfect fuel-food for her king as a strategy to save her people.
Elements of Faith
- Pursuing our God given purpose on earth.
- Never wasting time, the 24 hours a day and seven days a week to achieve our purpose according to our destinies.
- Grabbing the gift of salvation to attain the ultimate goal of eternal life.
Romans 8:25: "But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently."
