Are you perpetually bemused by yourself, your own lowliness and concern for your own ego 24-7? Well, I hate to break it to you but you lack humility.
What is that old adage again? Never ask a barber if you need a haircut. We all need the humility haircut! Before you give me the side eye, let’s define humility.
There can be a lot of confusion that surrounds this powerful trait. Often, it is associated with being quiet and passive. But, what does the Bible actually say about humility?
The world’s definition of humility often implies abated self-confidence but the Bible means getting your self-assurance from God, who loves and values you more. To be so free of concern for your own pride that you boisterously uplift those around you.
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” 1 Peter 5:5. “You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down”. 2 Samuel 22:28.
Let’s begin with what humility is not.
What Biblical Humility Is Not
- Instability: Personal insecurity is not biblical humility.
- Doubtfulness: Everyone adores decisive people even Jesus when he pointed to John the Baptist as a prime example of character, a man of who made courageous statements and gave clear directions.
- Being Passive: Playing it safe is in no way biblical humility. The Bible is not a respecter of laziness.
What Biblical Humility Is
- Depending on God and being aware of our desperate position and need for dependence upon the mercy and love of God.
- Unconcern for rank and privilege, accepting and serving others.
- Absolute and unquestioning obedience to the Word of God.
- Humility means creating peace and unity with others. Our own opinions and thoughts are not always better than others.

Jesus is the ultimate example of biblical humility, “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2: 6-8. God says, “But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word”Isaiah 66:2. “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.” Mark 9: 35-37. “For I say, through the grace that was given me, to every man who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think reasonably, as God has apportioned to each person a measure of faith.” Romans 12:3. “Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves” Philippians 2:3.
