Ever heard of the wicked Jezebel? Hate necessitates existence, and they that hate have to parade their hate in apt actions and demeanor; in a sense, they have to become hate- and that ladies and gentlemen was who wicked Jezebel was.
Once upon a time, a long time ago, there was a woman called Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal, king of Sidon and the wife of King Ahab who ruled the kingdom of Israel-she was the epitome of evil and all its relatives.
Jezebel stamped her name on history as an embodiment and the representative of all that is cruel, designing, crafty, malicious, revengeful and vanity. She has come to be recognized as a model of the wicked woman.
It was the first time that a king of Israel had allied himself by marriage with a heathen princess; an alliance of a peculiarly disastrous kind. Why would Ahab go for a seductress and the mother of villains? Baffles me.
King Ahab, who “did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any [king of Israel] before him,” 1 Kings 16:30
But wait a minute. What exactly did she do to deserve the title Wicked Jezebel centuries down the line? Let’s dissect the cow in the following points:
- Jezebel married Ahab and influenced him to worship Baal, an evil forceful god through her tyrannical Rule. Diabolical!
- Jezebel and Ahab both promoted idolatry and opposed the worship of God. Blasphemy!
- Jezebel neglected the rights and well-being of her subjects, and challenged God’s great prophets Elijah and Elisha. Tyrannical!
- Jezebel prompted the internal conflict that plagued Israel for decades. She is the first great instigator of persecution against the saints of God. Wicked oppressor!
- Power hungry, she sought to destroy anyone who questioned her, and most of God’s prophets were murdered at her request. Despotism!
- Murderous Envy: I Kings 21:5–16. Jezebel falsely accused Naboth of cursing “God and the king,” resulting to Naboth’s death by stoning because he declined to part with his inherited vineyard that was next to Ahab’s dwelling-which he envied and desired. Elijah faced Ahab in the vineyard, prophesying that he and all his successors would be slain and that dogs would devour Jezebel. Murderers!
Just like all oppressors, Ahab and Jezebel were crashed and overthrown-They went to the dogs!
- Ahab died in humiliation fighting with the Syrians.
- Elijah correctly predicted the encounter of a severe drought as God’s divine retribution against Jezebel.
- Elijah later had the Baal priests killed after they had failed in a contest with him to see which God would answer their prayers to inflame an offering, their Baal or God Almighty our Yahweh. Baal was mercilessly embarrassed- he never showed up!
- Elijah’s heir, Elisha the prophet, continued the determination to end Baal worship. He anointed a militant leader named Jehu to be king of Israel- which led to a civil war as Jehoram, Jezebel’s son, then ruled. Jehu killed Jehoram and sought to overthrow Jezebel and take his place as the rightful ruler of Israel.
- While taunting Jehu, Jezebel was tossed out of her window to a fatal fall. She was found by dogs that ate most of her body, just as Elijah had predicted. All oppressors always come tumbling down!
Jezebel’s name came to be used as the synonym for a wicked woman Revelation 2:20.
Jezebel did not fear either God or man, was glued to her heathen worship and advanced idolatry around her in all its splendor. However, her payday did not disappoint.
3 Warning lessons from Jezebel’s choices
- Integrity is king. Excellence is queen. Say no to oppression- the end for oppressors is never pretty.
- Who do you settle with? An orderly believer or a misleading Baal chaotic worshipper?
- With leadership comes responsibility and justice.
- Own up to your mistakes-Jezebel didn’t repent or recognize even when it clearly showed her gods had no power. Instead, her response was to plan revenge, fight back without contemplating what this event showed about her choices.
30 Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup, arranged her hair and looked out of a window. 31 As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, you Zimri, you murderer of your master?” 32 He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked down at him. 33 “Throw her down!” Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.34 Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of that cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.” 35 But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. 36They went back and told Jehu, who said, “This is the word of the LORD that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel’s flesh. 37 Jezebel’s body will be like dung on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, ‘This is Jezebel.’ 2 Kings 9:30-37 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. Revelation 2:20

Also important to note that Jezebel is the only woman mentioned in the Bible to have used make up to seduce Jehu. 2Kng 9: 30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.
And as the dogs feasted on her body in vs35, they avoided those areas with this artificial beauty. This shows God’s attitude towards lipstick, eye lash paints, nail polish, manicures, pedicure and all manner of artificial beauty. Not to mention the liberal dressing of women; minis, tight pants, high heels, low or bare chests. They share the same spirit as Jezebel and we can conclude that those who allow such, including churches which have artificial forms of worship, are direct daughters of Jezebel; whose end is the same indeed.
Rev19: 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
