Judgement is the tendency to form opinions too quickly especially when disapproving someone or something. Someone once said, “While you were busy judging, you left your closet open and your skeletons fell out.”
Before we slaughter the Pharisaic judgement, allow me to add this caveat: criminal and felonious behaviors are not the kinds of sin I am talking about. All criminals MUST be reported to the appropriate authorities, forthwith without hesitation.
Show me a man that has never sinned and I will show you a stone that is also bread. The Bible reminds us that we are all casualties of sin. Sin has repercussion on both our own lives and the lives of those around us.
So the million dollar question is raised: are we called as Believers in Christ to point out the sin of others?
Let’s dig in, shall we?
Romans 3:23- For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 1 John 1:8 -If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us
Our Lord Jesus Christ said,
Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:1-2.
This is simply an earnest caution to take great care of how we judge others because Jesus goes on to say,
Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Matthew 7: 3-5
Are you one of those keyboard judgement warriors with qualified judgemental opinions towards others?
Well, how we judge others reads far more about ourselves than how we are judged by others. But it is often cleaved out of ambience and misconceived.
Types Of Judgement
- The Superficial Self proclaimed Judges: They judge people based solely on appearances. Have you met keyboard warriors and social media qualified analysts? It is foolish to jump to conclusions before investigating the facts.
John 7:24: Judge not according to the appearance but judge righteous judgement. Also-Proverbs 18:13, Luke 7:36-50.
2. The Insincere judges: The hypocrites do wear their pietist badges well and in secret. They accuse others of certain uncouth behaviors but yet practice them in secret. Matthew 7:1-5, Matthew 6:2. Romans 2:1
3. The Ruthless, Unkind and Unforgiving Judges: Gentleness is a foreign word to them.
Titus 3:2- To speak evil of no one. To avoid quarreling, to be gentle and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. It is the merciful who will be shown mercy. Matthew 5:7
4. The Holier Than Thou Judges: Caution-Please Be Humble.
God opposes the proud- James 4:6
5. The Con-Artists: These false witness render untrue judgment and lobe sensationalism.
Scripture instructs Christians to judge at times- 1 Corinthians 5:12, our judgment should be like Christ’s-always magnanimous and gracious.
What To Do When The Judging Itch Attacks:
- Be slow to enunciate guilt when evidence is scant or gossip. In a court of law, the accused is innocent until sufficient evidence can demonstrate his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
- Be exhaustive: A verdict is not based merely on judicial common sense perception. Courts demand a stringent proceeding of guesstimating evidence in an effort to ensure that delusory appearances and prejudices do not distort the truth.
- Restitution is the goal: In the event of a misdeed, our goal is to gain back our brother or sister either as distant observers or in close relationships. We shouldn’t be punitive, but saving- we must watchfully remain kind to one another and tenderhearted.
- Exercise the right judgment by being benevolently quick to believe the innocent, altruistically slow to phonate guilt and big-heartedly redemptive when it must be.
Luke 17:3-4-So watch yourselves! “If another believer sins, rebuke that person then if there is repentance, forgive. Even if that person wrongs you seven times a day and each time turns again and asks forgiveness, you must forgive.” We are called by God to forgive one another’s sins. The ultimate call is not condemnation. James 5:19-20-My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins. Luke 6:37-38- Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
