5 Ways Of Desisting The Tongue From Being So Nasty And So Rude

”…O be careful little tongue what you say. For the Father up above Is looking down in love…” The TONGUE. A fleshy muscular organ of a mammal, used for tasting, licking, swallowing but also for articulating speech in human beings.

Like sand through the hour glass, so are the words of our mouth. A tiny spark can set a whole forest on fire, and the tongue ladies and gentlemen is like a small flame. This small member of the body can cause great destruction if allowed.

As a mere mortal like me, have you ever sparked a fire by your tongue’s doing? Maybe. Okay. Have you ever been on the receiving end of sharp and grim words from a poisonous tongue? Father Lord forgive me for I have sinned…

Shocking statistics show that the average person speaks at least 10 Million words a year. Imagine how many words that is in a lifetime?

Words are incredibly powerful. They can build up, encourage, and motivate. Words can also tear down, hurt, and cause scars. Words matter to God. He keeps a record of our words.

Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Prov 18:21.

Jesus said, "I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak." Matt 12:36

Let’s look at the power of the tongue, shall we?

  1. Baptize thy tongue to direct: Using the right words may direct someone out of sin and into salvation. Idle words, questionable stories, half-truths, the deliberate white and black lies lead to destruction. God, we desperately need you to be able to control our tongues!
  2. Uproot destruction from thy tongue: The tongue projects what comes from the heart. An evil tongue spreads poison while the spiritual tongue is medicine.
  3. Rename thy tongue to delight. Choose delight because the tongue cannot speak both blessing and cursing. Choose your tongue wisely.

5 Biblical principals of desisting the tongue from being so nasty and so rude

  1. Resist attack words: Never stick the dagger in deep with skirmish words. God wants us to use our words to bless others.
Jesus says in Matthew 5:44, "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

2. Repel gossip: It is next to impossible to unspread a rumor. Rumour-mongering is destructive albeit very subtle. Defy contributing or listening to gossip.

The one who reveals secrets is a constant gossip; avoid someone with a big mouth." Prov 20:19

A contrary man spreads conflict, and a gossip separates friends." Prov 16:28

3. Brush and floss thy words: Having a foul mouth is not honorable. Some words are not supposed to be said. Be careful what you watch, listen to or the company you keep.

4. Reputable words are resplendent: Lying destroys credibility. People need to believe and trust what we say.

Jesus said, "But let your word 'yes' be 'yes,' and your 'no' be 'no.' Anything more than this is from the evil one." Matt 5:37

5. Let uplifting words moisten your tongue: The Bible challenges us to use our words to help and to build others up.

No rotten talk should come from your mouth, but only what is good for the building up of someone in need, in order to give grace to those who hear. Eph 4:29

Tongue Monitoring and Evaluation

Mind over matter. Engage the mind first then the tongue. Is it true, profitable, encouraging, necessary and kind? Think before you speak.

Jesus said, But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man. Matt 15:18

My dearly loved brothers, understand this: everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man's anger does not accomplish God's righteousness. James 1:19-20

Proverbs 12:18 - There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Matthew 18:18, Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Proverbs 18:19; A brother who has been insulted is harder to win back than a walled city, and arguments separate people like the barred gates of a palace.

Proverbs 16:24; Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

Colossians 4:6; Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
